University of California San Diego announces new Research Center for Celiac Disease

The University of California at San Diego has opened a new Celiac Disease Research Center. This center, headed by Dr. Martin F. Kagnoff, Professor of Medicine at UCSD has been named The Wm. K. Warren Medical Research Center for Celiac Disease in recognition of a generous donation from the William K. Warren Foundation that led to establishment of the Center. The aim of the Research Center is to increase basic knowledge of genetic, environmental and immunologic factors that result in the development of Celiac Disease and to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic advances for the treatment of Celiac Disease. Through outreach activities, the Center also aims to increase the medical and patient community's knowledge about Celiac Disease. The senior research investigators associated with the Research Center are:
Martin F. Kagnoff, Professor of Medicine is the Center's Director. He is a widely recognized expert in the area of Celiac Disease and intestinal immune responses.
Michael Karin, Professor of Pharmacology, is widely recognized for his studies on the signaling and regulation of inflammation.
Hilde Cheroutre, Associate Professor of Medicine, is an authority on immunology of the small intestine.
The Warren Center has a distinguished group of scientists from other US and non US universities who serve as its Scientific Advisory Board and an active group of individuals, including Elaine Monarch of the CDF who serve on the Center's Community Advisory Board.
The Center is in the process of completing its first round of start-up funding of innovative small grants for investigators who will bring novel approaches to the study Celiac Disease.
A pediatric Celiac Disease Clinical Center is currently being established at Children's Hospital and Health Center in San Diego. Dr. Charles Yang and Dr. Sylvie Lebel who are pediatric gastroenterologists will treat and manage children with Celiac Disease at that site. In the near future, an adult Celiac Disease Clinical Center will be established at the UCSD Medical Center in La Jolla.
